The National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative Collaborates With Google

Allscripts-Led Initiative Works With Google Health to Enable Greater Online Collaboration between Physicians and Patients

ORLANDO, Fla., (February 28, 2008) –

Direct from the 2008 HIMSS Exhibition and Conference, Allscripts, the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, announced a collaboration between the National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative(TM) (NEPSI(TM)) and Google Health to provide physicians a new means of sharing health information over the Internet with their patients.

Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt previewed the Google Health product — which is not yet publicly available but being tested in a pilot — in his keynote address at HIMSS this morning. Dr. Schmidt also included NEPSI as an organization that Google is working with to help provide better access to patients’ medical records and unique services to help patients better manage their health.

Allscripts is collaborating with Google to integrate the web-based NEPSI electronic prescribing solution by Allscripts on the Google Health platform. The software is offered at no cost to physicians across America as a key element of NEPSI — a coalition of a number of the nation’s leading technology and healthcare organizations led by Allscripts and Dell. Google has also participated in the NEPSI coalition as the search sponsor. The collaboration allows physicians using the NEPSI solution to securely transfer their patients’ medication information into a Google Health account upon request by the user/patient. This connectivity provides patients with accurate clinical information helping them to better coordinate their care with a multitude of providers.

“More and more patients are turning to the Internet for health information, and any platform that enhances patient-physician interactions will help improve their health,” said Frank Opelka, M.D., Co-Chair of NEPSI, Chief Executive Officer of LSU Healthcare Network in New Orleans, and a member of the national Quality Alliance Steering Committee. “By giving patients the ability to collect their medication history and other clinical information, NEPSI’s collaboration with Google Health will be a great help in encouraging smarter, more engaged patients — which ultimately results in better care.”

The Allscripts solution replaces paper prescriptions with sophisticated technology that automates the prescription-writing process, helping to avoid dangerous medication errors attributed to illegible handwriting, and delivering automated safety checks. By allowing physicians to send electronic prescriptions to a patient’s preferred pharmacy, NEPSI e-prescribing saves time and adds efficiency to the process for patients and pharmacists.

“The integration of NEPSI’s electronic prescribing solution and Google Health means that patients will be able to gather, store and share their medication and related health information online,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts and Co-Chair of NEPSI. “As the leading provider of electronic health solutions for physicians, Allscripts, together with NEPSI, sees its collaboration with Google Health as another way to enable doctors to better communicate with their patients and increase the quality of care through a higher level of connectivity and collaboration.”
