Sequel Systems Launches Free SequelMed eRx Initiative to Drive Adoption of E-prescribing

Initiative Will Provide Free E-prescribing Software to Qualified Hospitals, Medical Societies and Physician Practices

MELVILLE, N.Y. (July 20, 2009) – Sequel Systems, Inc., a dynamic, service-oriented healthcare technology company, today announced the SequelMed eRx Initiative, which will make the company’s SequelMed e-Prescribe(TM) solution available to qualified hospitals and medical societies free of charge. The initiative is part of Sequel Systems’ ongoing campaign to reduce medical errors by increasing the adoption and active use of e-prescribing technology in hospitals and physicians’ offices across the nation.

“By integrating our Alchemy database with the SequelMed e-Prescribe software as part of this Initiative, we are adding another layer of support for physicians as they make the transition to e-prescribing and electronic health records.”
E-prescribing improves the quality, safety and care of patients by increasing the accuracy of prescriptions and reducing the number of adverse drug events. A recent Institute of Medicine report found that medical errors result in more than 100,000 deaths and more than 1.5 million injuries each year, costing U.S. taxpayers anywhere from $17 to $19 billion annually. Additionally, e-prescribing drives efficiencies and cost savings by reducing the amount of time spent communicating with pharmacies and increasing occurrence of generic substitutions for brand name drugs.

“For many hospitals and medical organizations, e-prescribing is the first step on the path to implementing a comprehensive electronic health record (EHR),” said Irfan Iqbal, director of medical informatics at Sequel Systems. “The benefits of e-prescribing extend far beyond accurate and paperless prescribing and open up a wealth of data integration and business intelligence functions that are indicative of the future of healthcare. The Sequel Systems’ eRx Initiative is our way of supporting healthcare reform and improved patient care by facilitating adoption of this critical technology in hospitals and through medical societies.”

Sequel Systems’ SequelMed e-Prescribe solution allows physicians to automatically and electronically exchange new prescriptions and prescription information securely with pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) throughout all 50 states and Washington D.C. Physicians using the technology can access pharmacy and payer information in real-time to verify eligibility, formulary information and medication history before a prescription is written, thereby reducing potential errors, increasing physician effectiveness and improving overall patient safety and quality of care.

Unique benefits of Sequel Systems’ eRx Initiative include:

Industry-leading technology, such as data integration through Web services, to ensure that physician data is integrated seamlessly with hospital data;
Unparalleled business intelligence reporting that helps physicians and hospitals take advantage of Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) and American Recovery & Reinvestment Act incentive programs by fulfill data reporting requirements;
Custom Website branding for hospitals and medical societies.
Through a partnership with Gold Standard, the SequelMed eRx Initiative will also give physicians’ access to Alchemy, an integrated drug database and clinical decision support engine that delivers the most current and accurate drug information and medication decision support tools. The Alchemy database integrates seamlessly with SequelMed’s e-Prescribe solution and includes such features as medication alerts for interactions and allergies, patient education information and a drug image library, among others.

“It is our mission to do everything we can to reduce medication errors and increase the quality of patient care by providing both physicians and patients with accurate and meaningful drug information at the point-of-care,” said Marianne Messer, Vice President Pharmacy Solutions. “By integrating our Alchemy database with the SequelMed e-Prescribe software as part of this Initiative, we are adding another layer of support for physicians as they make the transition to e-prescribing and electronic health records.”
