Pennsylvania Hospital – the nation’s first – was founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond. Today, the 500-bed Philadelphia hospital is a major teaching and clinical research institution and is one of three hospitals owned by the $2.9 billion University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS). All three UPHS hospitals now utilize Canopy to streamline their care management workflow, manage insurance claims, monitor length of stay and each patient’s health status from the moment they are admitted to when they are safely discharged.

“Canopy is an easy-to-use, automated system that will help our clinical staff focus on the patient as they manage care across the continuum,” said Dorothy Counts, Clinical Director for Quality and Patient Safety at Pennsylvania Hospital, ranked among the nation’s leaders for heart care and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report. “We also anticipate that Allscripts will increase our efficiency by enabling us to easily communicate with multiple entities using Canopy Connect.”

Canopy streamlines and automates utilization, case, discharge and quality management processes while generating an immediate return on investment by improving a hospital’s revenue cycle. A web-based, Application Service Provider (ASP) solution, Canopy can be installed quickly and efficiently with minimal IT support. Canopy Connect provides seamless, secure online communications with payers, physicians and others, enabling hospitals to quickly and easily communicate care management information such as clinical reviews, post-acute placement requests and physician referrals.

Canopy delivered significant financial returns and improved efficiency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, another UPHS hospital that recently implemented the Allscripts system, according to Kathy Rickard, R.N., Associate Director of Clinical Resource Management and Social Work.

“Canopy is a powerful tool that brought our staff into the 21st century,” said Rickard. “Using Canopy, we’ve reduced length of stay even while the acuity of our patients has increased, and we get reimbursed for our services more quickly. The customer service from Allscripts is very good; they’re constantly improving the system, making it more sophisticated, while keeping it very user friendly.”

Pennsylvania Hospital will interface Canopy with its other information systems, including its Eclipsys CPOE system and Medview hospital portal, to provide a real-time feed of the essential patient information needed for the care management process. The hospital’s nearly 900 staff and affiliated physicians will access Canopy data via Medview, enabling a seamless handoff from the hospital to the physician’s office.

“Hospitals today need accurate, real-time information to provide the best care possible and more effectively manage their costs, and Canopy delivers that while providing physicians outside the hospital a window into the treatment their patient’s received,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “We’re very proud that Allscripts is the choice of the nation’s first hospital and now the entire University of Pennsylvania Health System.”
