Ochsner Health Care System to Deploy Allscripts Electronic Health Record and Practice Management Solution
Allscripts interoperability enables linkage with legacy EMR used by 600 New Orleans physicians
CHICAGO and NEW ORLEANS (August 07, 2007) –
Allscripts (Nasdaq: MDRX), the leading provider of clinical software and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, announced today that Ochsner Health System has selected Allscripts as their provider of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Practice Management (PM) solutions to help automate and connect clinical and administrative processes for their 600 physicians.

The Allscripts solutions provide new functionality that will enhance the performance of Ochsner’s existing Electronic Medical Record, which will remain deployed systemwide. Ochsner Health System is one of the largest healthcare systems in the Gulf Coast region with more than 600 physicians in 80 medical specialties and subspecialties, and seven hospitals including 473-bed Ochsner Medical Center. Ochsner was ranked one of the nation’s best hospitals by U.S. News and World Report in July 2007.
“We believe Allscripts will greatly improve our ability to capture patient information electronically, in a way that interoperates with our existing EMR platform,” said Warner Thomas, President of Ochsner Health System. “Today, for example, more than half of our physicians document patient visits through dictation, which is expensive to transcribe into the electronic record. Allscripts is intuitive enough that we think those physicians will be convinced to use it for documentation, saving us the transcription costs while bringing other benefits, such as better compliance with clinical guidelines and best practices.”
Ochsner Chief Information Officer Lynn Witherspoon, M. D., said Allscripts was selected not only for its industry-leading Electronic Health Record but also for its ability to interoperate with virtually any other healthcare information technology system.
“Without the architecture that Allscripts has developed, interoperability would be next to impossible,” said Witherspoon, who is also System Vice President at Ochsner. “This is far more than just passing data back and forth — it’s participating in a service architecture. That significant degree of interoperability is what allows Allscripts to offer solutions in a heavily automated environment like Ochsner.”
A central part of the Allscripts interoperability strategy is its Universal Application Integrator(TM) (UAI(TM)), patent-pending architecture that allows Allscripts to quickly meet client needs by enabling over 70 different third-party devices and applications to “plug-in” to the Electronic Health Record through a standard interface. With UAI, any vendor can quickly and easily connect their software and hardware products to Allscripts, providing Ochsner with a virtually unlimited choice of medical devices and specialty applications to connect to their Electronic Health Record.
Witherspoon also noted that Allscripts has the proven ability to build custom integrations, such as incorporating the billing and scheduling elements of the Allscripts practice management solution into Ochsner’s existing system. And the modular architecture of the Allscripts Electronic Health Record enables Ochsner to first deploy just the Note module, which streamlines the documentation of patient visits with unprecedented levels of ready-to-use clinical content, advanced health management tools, and an intuitive, physician-friendly user interface.
“We are proud that Ochsner Health System, one of the premier healthcare systems in the Gulf Coast region, has selected Allscripts,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “This partnership between Ochsner and Allscripts comes, in part, from our commitment to interoperability, which we believe is the only way to build a truly interconnected healthcare system that delivers better care at lower cost for all Americans.”
