Nation’s Largest Municipal Hospital and Health System to Automate Patient Care Management and Discharge Process
CHICAGO (May 24, 2007) –
Allscripts (Nasdaq: MDRX), the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, today announced that New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) has selected the Canopy(R) Care Management solution from Allscripts to help manage and coordinate care for patients throughout their stay at the hospital.

The largest municipal hospital and health care system in the country, HHC is a $5.4 billion public benefit corporation that serves 1.3 million New Yorkers and nearly 400,000 who are uninsured. HHC provides medical, mental health and substance abuse services through its 11 acute care hospitals, four skilled nursing facilities, six large diagnostic and treatment centers and more than 80 community-based clinics. Additionally, HHC Health and Home Care provides health services at home for New Yorkers.
Following a competitive selection process, HHC will deploy Canopy initially at four New York metropolitan sites, with an option to extend the solution to all 11 of its hospitals. The four sites, which together account for nearly 2 million annual patient visits, are: Elmhurst Hospital Center, a 556-bed facility in Elmhurst, NY; Queens Hospital Center, a 260-bed facility in Jamaica, NY; Woodhull Medical Center, a 371-bed facility in Brooklyn, NY; and Kings County Hospital Center, a 627-bed facility, also in Brooklyn.
Canopy streamlines and automates the care management process — utilization, case management, quality management and discharge — and monitors each patient’s length of stay and health status from admission to discharge. A web-based solution that leverages the Application Service Provider (ASP) model to minimize hardware and support requirements, Canopy can be installed and implemented in under 12 weeks and is available to end-users from any location with Internet access. By standardizing the patient care management process and enhancing the productivity of the care management team, Canopy has generated an immediate return-on-investment for more than 200 hospitals across the nation, including some of the nation’s most prestigious medical institutions.
“We’re pleased that Allscripts is the choice of the nation’s largest municipal hospital and healthcare system, and we look forward to helping HHC enhance its operations for the benefit of all New Yorkers,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “Hospitals today need accurate, real-time information to provide the best possible care for their patients while more effectively managing their costs. Allscript’s Canopy offering delivers that and more.”
HHC will interface Canopy with its other inpatient information systems, providing a real-time feed of essential patient clinical, financial and demographic information to inform the care management team, and will also have the option of providing information feeds to the Allscripts Electronic Health Records being used by ambulatory physicians across the state.
