Lahey Clinic Selects Allscripts Electronic Health Record for 500 Physicians

Renowned Medical Group to Connect Physicians in Two Hospitals and Community-Based Practices Across the Boston Area

CHICAGO and BURLINGTON, Mass., (November 08, 2007) –

Allscripts, the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, today announced that Lahey Clinic has selected the company as its Electronic Health Record provider for more than 500 community-based physicians. The agreement is the latest example of Allscripts leadership in serving the nation’s top academic medical centers.

Lahey Clinic, a physician-led, nonprofit group practice, is world-renowned for innovative technology, pioneering medical treatment, and leading-edge research. Founded in 1923 as the first multi-specialty physician group in the nation, Lahey Clinic today is one of the largest multi-specialty group practices in New England. Last year, Lahey Clinic surgeons performed 19,000 surgeries and its two Emergency Departments received more than 54,000 patient visits. Lahey Clinic’s physicians, along with more than 4,000 nurses, therapists and other staff, support a multidisciplinary approach that allows patients access to the best available care in virtually every medical specialty.

“We are pleased to be working with Allscripts in this major step forward to creating electronic medical records here at Lahey Clinic,” said Peter K. Dempsey, M.D., Vice-Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Lahey Clinic, who led the group’s EHR selection committee. “We look forward to deploying the system within the next 12 months. Until then we will be working with our physicians, nurses, colleagues, and with Allscripts, to help design and implement this ambitious and exciting project.”

The web-based Electronic Health Record from Allscripts will automate everyday clinical tasks such as prescribing medications and documenting patient visits, while electronically connecting physicians, nurses, 130 resident physicians-in-training, and support staff. The Electronic Health Record delivers patient information anywhere at anytime and provides robust tools for documentation and orders. Additionally, the Electronic Health Record includes preloaded connections to a wide range of medical devices, seamless support for pay-for-performance and quality initiatives, and one of the most advanced clinical research support systems in the industry.

Lahey Clinic also will implement Allscripts Analytics, an advanced research and measurement tool within the EHR that enables users to easily query the system’s relational database of patient records to review key clinical performance indicators. By generating reports from multiple applications throughout the enterprise, Analytics can be used to enhance a variety of business and research functions including pay-for-performance measures, clinical findings, care planning statistics, health maintenance, population disease management and clinical trials recruitment.

“Lahey Clinic’s physicians are known internationally for their commitment to clinical excellence and research, and we are extremely proud that they have selected Allscripts as their electronic health information partner,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “We’re especially excited that Lahey’s physicians will be using our system to enhance their ability to make important breakthroughs in clinical research, which fits directly with our vision of software, information and connectivity as a way to provide better healthcare.”

Allscripts will interface the Electronic Health Record with inpatient clinical information systems across the Lahey Clinic network, including the 317-bed hospital at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., which is a teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine, and the 10-bed hospital at Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore, in Peabody, Mass. The interface between Allscripts and the inpatient systems will enable physicians and staff at any Lahey Clinic location to access each patient’s medication history, problems list, allergies, hospital notes, and other key clinical information.

Allscripts also will connect the Electronic Health Record with the practice management system used by Lahey Clinic’s physicians. Linking the clinical and financial information systems will help Lahey Clinic’s physicians and practice administrators to streamline billing and insurance reimbursement practices.
