Kindred Healthcare, Inc. is a healthcare services company that through its subsidiaries operates hospitals, nursing centers and a contract rehabilitation services business across the United States. Kindred is the nation’s largest post-acute provider as ranked by revenues. Allscripts will implement its web-based solutions for all of Kindred’s facilities over the next three months.

Kindred facilities will use the Allscripts solutions to connect electronically with caregivers and case managers in thousands of US hospitals, including several hundred hospitals that use the web-based Allscripts Care Management solution to manage care and find locations for patients requiring additional care. Using Allscripts, Kindred’s skilled nursing facilities will be able to receive and respond instantly to electronic patient referrals from hospitals. Kindred LTAC hospitals will have the additional capability of sending electronic patient referrals to the 7,000 post-acute facilities nationwide that use Allscripts for referral management, enabling Kindred to quickly find the right facility to take their own discharged patients.

“We expect to receive increasing numbers of electronic referrals from hospitals, as they seek to speed and streamline that critical process, so it makes sense to partner with Allscripts, the leader in that space,” said Lane Bowen, Executive Vice President of Kindred and President of the Health Services Division. “Allscripts will make it much easier for our skilled nursing facilities to respond quickly to hospital discharge planners and improve our bottom line performance by capturing more patients who are appropriate to our type of care.”

Benjamin Breier, Executive Vice President and President of Kindred’s Hospital Division, added that Kindred’s LTAC hospitals need solutions that allow them to manage patient transfers more efficiently and expeditiously than in the past. “We need volume, we need speed, and we need to gain additional management insight and perspective into the discharge and referral processes,” said Breier. “These services are going to become more common and it’s going to happen sooner rather than later, so we’re better off ahead of the curve with the leader in the space, Allscripts.”

Allscripts enables post-acute care facilities to track all patient referrals in a single system. Customers automatically receive and respond to referrals from hospitals, enter referrals from non-electronic sources, and collect important marketing information. Allscripts also enables clients to manage tasks involved in the intake process, generate business letters and documents, and send referrals to the next appropriate level of care.

“Long-term acute care hospitals and skilled nursing facilities need accurate, real-time information to provide the best care possible and more effectively manage their costs, and our referral management solutions deliver that while providing caretakers outside the hospital a window into the treatment their patient’s received,” said Jeff Surges, President of Allscripts Health Systems Group. “Kindred’s selection of Allscripts will help them continue to lead the market with the most advanced patient care and business systems available.”
