PHILADELPHIA & CHICAGO (February 21, 2006) –
Allscripts (Nasdaq:MDRX), the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, announced today that Jefferson University Physicians (JUP), part of Thomas Jefferson University, will implement the TouchWorks(TM) Electronic Health Record (EHR) to connect and provide clinical automation for 480 physicians and 700 residents. Allscripts indicated the contract is the largest it has signed, with a value in excess of $5.5 million.
The Allscripts EHR solution will enable JUP physicians to have instant access to clinical records from any of the group’s 75 practice locations, the hospital or remotely, and provide a seamless connection to the other administrative and clinical systems in use by Jefferson.
“Our partnership with Allscripts improves our ability to create a premier, patient-focused, integrated physician practice, while enhancing our tradition as a distinguished academic medical center,” said Robert Barchi, MD, PhD, President of Thomas Jefferson University and Chair of the JUP Board. “It is essential that we provide our residents and fellows access to leading technology and the electronic health record has emerged as a mission critical tool for 21st century medicine. It was clear that Allscripts is the ‘solution of choice’ to align our integrated practice with an integrated clinical information system. Additionally, their level of expertise and experience in interfacing with IDX applications is impressive.”
JUP conducted an extensive two-year evaluation of electronic health record vendors and ultimately selected Allscripts for its industry leadership and its track record of successful electronic health record deployments at many of the nation’s most prestigious academic medical centers. Additionally, Allscripts will provide standardized interoperability with the physician group’s existing IDX(R) Flowcast(TM) practice management system, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s (TJUH) acute care clinical information system. Allscripts and IDX, now a part of GE Healthcare, share a strategic relationship that will directly link clinical and financial information systems to support process redesign and operational enhancements at JUP.
“Allscripts has a proven track record with physician practice, multi-center deployments,” said Bruce Metz, Thomas Jefferson University’s Chief Information Officer. “The fact that the application is web-based was important as our physicians will be able to access patient information securely anywhere at anytime. The implementation of the EHR will also improve JUP’s position to provide quality care while ensuring a state of the art environment for patient care and resident and student education.”
With the Allscripts EHR solution, JUP physicians will have the ability to automate many of their daily clinical tasks, such as prescribing medications, ordering lab tests, viewing test results, making referrals electronically and documenting clinical encounters.
“Our physicians are poised to begin implementation of these systems immediately,” commented Thomas Nasca, MD, Dean of Jefferson Medical College and JUP President. “This will be a significant step forward not only for JUP and our physicians, but especially for the patients we serve.”
“Jefferson University Physicians is a world-class organization and we are excited to partner with them as they continue to lead the transformation of the delivery of healthcare in the Philadelphia area,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “With their outstanding reputation as an organization and level of commitment to this project, there is no question that JUP will quickly become one of the premier EHR reference sites on the East Coast.”
