The Physician IT Leadership award, announced in a ceremony here last night, is presented annually to one individual who has demonstrated significant leadership in the area of applying IT to the needs of physicians, serving the Society and the industry.

“The Electronic Health Record has revitalized my purpose in life,” said Dr. Morrow, who is a family practice physician and a Commissioner on the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT). “After twenty-some years in practice and being in an exam room every day, I have an opportunity to impact a lot more lives. Through my advocacy work, I feel like I am reaching out to people who will then reach thousands, and that has energized me all over again for healthcare.”

Dr. Morrow has achieved solid success using technology to improve patient care and reduce costs at North Fulton’s 11-physician practice in suburban Atlanta. In 2004, Dr. Morrow received the Nicholas Davies Award for Ambulatory Care Excellence, the industry’s top honor for achieving significant success with an Electronic Health Record. In addition to his position at CCHIT, Dr. Morrow is Director of the Medical Association of Georgia Institute for Excellence in Medicine, a member of the JCAHO Healthcare IT Advisory Panel and Physicians Foundation Functional Review Panel, and volunteers his time in a number of roles within HIMSS. He is also president and founder of Healthcare Quality, Technology, & Research, Inc., a healthcare information technology consulting firm.

“As a physician dedicated to quality patient care and a former HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence recipient, Dr. Jim Morrow recognizes the benefit that technology brings to his patients and to his medical practice,” said H. Stephen Lieber, HIMSS President and Chief Executive Officer. “He is a physician leader and volunteer with HIMSS, who continues to share his knowledge and expertise with other physicians who want to make the transition from paper to digital records. HIMSS is honored to recognize Dr. Jim Morrow as the 2006 recipient of the Physician IT Leadership award.”

Thanks to Dr. Morrow’s leadership and drive throughout the implementation process of North Fulton’s HealthMatics(R) Electronic Health Record from Allscripts, the practice experienced a full first-year return on investment of $1,249,568. Automating the practice has also enabled North Fulton to significantly increase the number of patients treated annually from 21,000 to 80,000, while decreasing the number of full-time physician support staff from 4.7 per physician prior to implementation to 2.1 per physician today.

“Dr. Morrow is a true physician leader, based not only on his key role in implementing HealthMatics at North Fulton, where they have achieved incredible results, but also on his leadership within the broader physician and IT community,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “Allscripts is extremely proud to count Dr. Morrow as our client and we congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”

Dr. Morrow attended Clemson University for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees before graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Prior to joining North Fulton Family Medicine in 1998, he practiced in his home of Greenville, South Carolina. Today he practices in and manages North Fulton’s office in Cumming, Georgia.
