athenahealth Named to MIT Technology Review’s 2012 TR50 List of World’s Most Innovative Companies
WATERTOWN, Mass. (February 22, 2012) – athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based practice management, electronic health record (EHR), and care coordination services to medical groups, has been named to the 2012 TR50, Technology Review’s third annual list of the world’s most innovative technology companies.
TR50 members are nominated by Technology Review’s editors, who look for companies that over the last year have demonstrated original and valuable technology, are bringing that technology to market at a significant scale, and are clearly influencing their competitors. Spanning energy, computing, the Web, biomedicine, and materials, the companies on the list represent commercial innovations most likely to change lives around the world.
athenahealth was singled out by the editors of Technology Review for its systems “which help doctors and patients with the morass of medical records and billing paperwork.” The company was also recognized for its key innovation of “developing cloud-based software for electronic health records and practice management.”
“athenahealth is doing important work to help doctors and patients navigate the new era of electronic medical records. Among its innovations is the way its system runs online, in the cloud, which lets it continuously update and improve its service,” said Jason Pontin, Editor in Chief and Publisher of Technology Review.
“Being named to the TR50 is like hanging out with the cool crowd in high school,” said Jonathan Bush, athenahealth Chairman and CEO. “Any which way you come at this list, athenahealth is shoulder to shoulder with innovative businesses that have challenged legacy products and disrupted the status quo through use of technology. At athenahealth we have used the power of the cloud to create a national backbone for the exchange of health information that, hard as it is to imagine, never existed. Being recognized as influencing the technology innovation curve in what’s historically been a very flat-footed industry is the proverbial icing on the cake.”
athenahealth and the other companies included in the 2012 TR50 will be featured in the March/April edition of Technology Review, online at www.technologyreview.com, and are currently posted on the Web at www.technologyreview.com/tr50.
