Allscripts (Nasdaq: MDRX), the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, today announced that Albany Medical Center has selected Allscripts as their Electronic Health Record (EHR) provider to automate clinical tasks for 250 physicians in their medical faculty group, and connect them to the organization’s hospitals.

Albany Medical Center is the only academic health sciences center in the 25 counties of eastern New York and western New England. Based in Albany, NY, the Medical Center incorporates the 631-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital; Albany Medical College, one of upstate New York’s largest teaching hospitals; the Albany Medical Center Faculty Group Practice, staffed by full-time clinical faculty members of the Medical College; and the Albany Medical Center Foundation, Inc., one of the largest fund-raising organizations in the region.

The web-based Electronic Health Record from Allscripts will automate everyday clinical tasks while electronically connecting healthcare physicians, residents in training, and other healthcare providers in the Albany Medical Center Faculty Group Practice to those in the system’s hospitals, as well as to laboratories, pharmacies, insurers and other key healthcare stakeholders. The Electronic Health Record delivers instant access to patient information anywhere at anytime, whether providers are in the clinic, at the hospital or on-call at home. The solution provides physicians with robust tools for documentation and orders, preloaded connections to a wide range of medical devices, and seamless support for pay-for-performance and quality initiatives. To support high quality patient care, Allscripts also provides ready-to-use templates that deliver best practice guidelines for more than 1,200 different clinical situations, and automated health management plans that are customized for each patient.

Albany Medical Center’s selection of Allscripts followed a two-year evaluation process to determine which Electronic Health Record would best enable the faculty practice to provide high quality care efficiently and economically while supporting continuity of care across the organization. The selection process included several visits by Medical Center leadership to other major academic medical faculty practices that have successfully implemented Allscripts.

Albany Medical Center will connect the Allscripts Electronic Health Record with its Siemens Envision inpatient information system through a physician portal, enabling full interoperability of clinical and financial information between the hospital and faculty practice. Allscripts also will integrate the solution with a number of other information systems in the Medical Center, providing physicians the ability to order and review results from pathology, radiology, PACS, cardiology and GI evaluations, and to access clinical notes on hospitalized patients.

“Healthcare enterprises have become so complex that it is no longer realistic to depend on paper documentation as the primary means of storing and communicating information,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “By implementing our Electronic Health Record, Albany Medical Center is providing their physicians with the information they need to deliver better care, while at the same time educating the next generation search.”
