ATHENAHEALTH ASSUMES TOP NATIONAL RANKING IN 2008 KLAS PRACTICE MANAGEMENT CATEGORY FOR SMALL PHYSICIAN PRACTICES

Company Retains Top Ranking in 26-100 Physician Practice Category; Enhanced Offering Supports Company’s plans for Continued Expansion into Enterprise Market

N/A (December 17, 2008) – athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHN), a leading provider of internet-based business services to physician practices, today announced that it has assumed the top ranking for physician practices with two to five physicians in the practice management category in the annual 2008 Top 20 “Best in KLAS” Awards report. athenahealth’s on-demand practice management and billing service, athenaCollectorSM, also received “Best in KLAS” for the second straight year in the 26-100 physician practice category and ranked second for medical groups with six -25 physicians.

“Over the past year we have launched numerous projects designed to enhance the functionality and service support of the software interface of athenaNet(R), our centrally-hosted national software platform that supports athenahealth’s practice management, billing and electronic medical record services,” said Rob Cosinuke, Chief Marketing Officer for athenahealth. “These efforts are directly correlated to our ability to scale our national platform for medical groups of all sizes without sacrificing functionally or the consistent financial and clinical results that we deliver for our provider clients across the nation as they look to deal with an increasingly complex payer reimbursement environment and difficult clinical documentation requirements.”

As part of its athenaCollector service, athenahealth has built a proprietary knowledge-base of payer reimbursement process rules, athenaRules, which is designed to enforce medical provider office workflow requirements, and is updated continuously by athenahealth staff. athenaRules acts as a proactive utility that guides clinic staff away from making billing mistakes that impact operational performance and the overall patient experience.

In 2008, athenahealth also launched its national platform for real-time claims adjudication (RTA) with UnitedHealthcare and Humana. The platform is designed to allow any payer who meets certain technological requirements to participate by linking to the athenaNet network. athenahealth clients across the country are able to use the information returned in the real-time response to understand the exact amount that should be collected from the patient at the time of service within a matter of seconds. athenahealth’s RTA platform is one of several areas that the company is aggressively pursuing to help furnish provider clients with relevant information at the time of service as they look to operate more effective medical practices and navigate a growing consumer-based reimbursement environment.
