WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY PHYSICIAN GROUP SELECTS ATHENAHEALTH’S CENTRALLY-HOSTED PRACTICE MANAGEMENT SERVICES

WATERTOWN, Mass. (June 05, 2008) – athenahealth, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATHN), a leading provider of Internet-based business services to physician practices, today announced that Wayne State University’s Physician Group (WSUPG) has selected athenahealth’s centrally-hosted, on-demand practice management and billing service, athenaCollector(SM). WSUPG has a network of over 400 medical providers. WSUPG physicians deliver care in some of the area’s most respected medical institutions, including the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, the Kresge Eye Institute, and the hospital and clinical systems associated with the Detroit Medical Center, Oakwood Healthcare System, and Crittenton Hospital Medical Center.

“athenahealth’s centrally-hosted platform will allow WSUPG and their physician members to experience a ‘network effect’ in which shared knowledge from across athenahealth’s entire national client base can enable them to improve their operational efficiency and outcomes through greater transparency into their practices’ financial and overall physician performance,” said Jonathan Bush, Chairman and CEO of athenahealth.

As part of athenahealth’s software-enabled service (SeS), athenaCollector, athenahealth has built in a proprietary knowledge-base of payer reimbursement process rules, athenaRules(SM), which is designed to enforce medical provider office workflow requirements, and is continually updated with payer-specific coding and documentation information by athenahealth staff. athenaRules acts as a proactive utility that guides clinic staff away from making billing mistakes that impact operational performance and the overall patient experience.
