TYLER, Texas & CHICAGO (January 03, 2006) –
Allscripts (Nasdaq:MDRX), the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, today announced that Access Medica has chosen the TouchWorks(TM) Electronic Health Record to connect and automate physicians in communities across East Texas, in an agreement valued in excess of $1.4 million.
The Tyler-based Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) will deploy the industry-leading Electronic Health Record to 29 physicians in six independent clinics during the first phase of a regional deployment, and an additional 50-60 physicians in mid-2006. Access Medica’s infrastructure is being designed to connect over 600 regional physicians across ten counties and will be the first operational RHIO model in the state. Access Medica was founded in 2005 to provide cutting-edge healthcare IT services to the physicians, hospitals and patients of East Texas. The RHIO includes members of the Tyler-based Physicians Contracting Organization of Texas and other independent practices.
“Allscripts is the ideal solution for providing clinical integration for physicians across East Texas,” said Ken Haygood, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Access Medica. “This technology is not only critical to improving patient care and reducing healthcare costs, but will allow broader population based research, disease surveillance, and better security and preparedness for natural disasters. Our physicians feel that this technology is mission critical.”
The web-based Allscripts Electronic Health Record enhances the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality care by connecting physician practices, clinics, pharmacies and laboratories across a secure network. Providers have instant access to the complete patient record when and where they need it, without relying on error-prone, often outdated paper charts that must be faxed or transported between locations.
The RHIO’s electronic health record selection committee spent nearly a year visiting practices across the country and interviewing executives of several leading electronic health record vendors before selecting Allscripts.
“In our assessment, Allscripts is substantially ahead of the other vendors in connectivity with their web-based product design, and in their expertise in rapidly deploying the technology and in designing workflow changes for practices,” said Haygood. “Many companies are focused only on their own bottom line, but we believe Allscripts shares our concern for building true health information networks to improve the delivery of high-quality, cost-efficient, community-based patient care.”
Haygood also was impressed by Allscripts willingness to work with a wide variety of practice management systems used by his independent practices to share financial, demographic and clinical information across the network.
“Access Medica shares Allscripts vision for a coordinated, community-wide approach to enhancing the quality and efficiency of healthcare,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “The key to transforming healthcare is to connect and inform physicians across boundaries rather than create small technological fiefdoms. We are proud to partner with Access Medica to better serve the health of communities throughout East Texas.”
