CHICAGO & DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 24, 2006) –
Allscripts (Nasdaq:MDRX), the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare, today announced that Florida Health Care Plans, Inc. (FHCP) has selected the TouchWorks(TM) Electronic Health Record to automate and connect their multi-specialty group of 70 physicians and mid-level providers. In the future, FHCP will offer connectivity to the Allscripts solution to all physicians participating in their network of providers.
Founded in 1974, FHCP is a wholly owned not-for-profit subsidiary of Halifax Community Health System. FHCP has 10 facilities serving more than 62,000 members in Volusia and Flagler Counties consisting of employer groups, Medicare beneficiaries, and participants in the Healthy Kids program.
“We are drowning in paper,” said Wendy Myers, MD, FHCP’s Chief Medical Officer and President. “That makes it difficult to improve quality and patient safety, which are our most important missions. Allscripts provides our physicians the tools they need to take better care of patients, and gives patients better tools to take care of themselves.”
The Allscripts solution brings FHCP’s providers instant access to their patients’ medical records when and where they need them – in the clinic, at the hospital or on-call at home – without relying on paper charts. Allscripts’ easy-to-deploy, physician-centric Electronic Health Record improves the delivery of safe, high-quality, cost-effective care by automating common tasks such as prescribing and refilling medications, ordering and viewing tests, and documenting care.
FHCP also will implement the iHealth module of TouchWorks, which gives patients secure, online access to their own personal health record, the ability to request appointments and medication refills online, and the ability to receive health education that is personalized for them. This application is provided in partnership with Medem, the nation’s premier physician-patient communications network, founded and governed by the American Medical Association (AMA) and other leading medical societies. FHCP will promote iHealth in their work with regional employer groups, for whom FHCP conducts employee wellness programs, personal health analyses and health education.
After a rigorous review of Electronic Health Record vendors, FHCP selected Allscripts for its ease of use, its off-the-shelf non-proprietary technology, and its interoperability with other information technology systems, said Roy Klostermeyer, FHCP’s Chief Information Officer. Even more important, Klostermeyer said FHCP was impressed by Allscripts supportive base of installed customers.
“We were invited to an Allscripts user group conference as a prospect and I was allowed to mingle with established clients and everyone was happy,” said Klostermeyer. “They were ecstatic. Most companies won’t let prospects mingle with customers, and I thought it was unusual to find such a satisfied customer user base. In fact, they were so satisfied they were a bit evangelical about the product.”
FHCP will interface the Electronic Health Record with many existing FHCP systems such as practice management, laboratory, transcription and radiology, as well as clinical instrumentation including blood pressure, pulse, temperature and pulse oximetry. The interfaces will enable FHCP to share financial, demographic and clinical information across the organization.
“Seventy percent of patients say they’re seeking online services such as secure messaging, online refill requests, easy access to and review of lab results, and access to disease management plans,” said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. “With iHealth, Florida Health Care Plans delivers patients the services they demand, while at the same time improving the quality of care their physicians provide. We are proud to partner with Florida Health Care Plans to deliver iHealth as a part of our comprehensive TouchWorks Electronic Health Record for the well-being of east central Florida’s patients.”
