Newport Beach, CA (May 09, 2011) –
Physicians can qualify for the federal government’s meaningful use payments without paying for software now that Mitochon System’s free EHR system has been fully certified. Mitochon’s mEMR system was awarded full ONC-ATSB certification by the Drummond Group on May 6; see the ONC’s Certified HIT Product list website, http://onc-chpl.force.com/ehrcert.
“Many independent physicians have looked at qualifying for the meaningful use incentives and decided that it makes no economic sense for them,” said Andre Vovan, M.D., founder of Mitochon Systems (www.mitochonsystems.com).
Physicians seeking to earn meaningful use incentives under the Medicare program can earn up to $18,000 per year in payments if they adopt a certified EHR and document or “attest” their usage. However, many have found it will cost them for more than that to acquire the needed software.
“A recent survey by the MGMA of medical practices about MU eligibility found that the single biggest barrier for those still using paper records was lack of capital resources to buy an EHR,” Dr. Vovan noted.
The Mitochon mEMR system is ad-supported and delivered via the Web. Physicians do not pay for the EHR, ads are displayed within the workflow of the application. Mitochon offers a full-time Client Service Department to help physicians with installation and maintenance at no charge.
A California HealthCare Foundation survey of primary-care physicians released last month found that just 20% of solo practitioners had adopted an EHR. The CHCF report is available at http://www.chcf.org/~/media/Files/PDF/S/PDF%20StateHealthInfoTechnologyCA.pdf
“These independent physicians account for many healthcare services, particularly for the chronically ill. If we are ever going to bend the cost curve we need to get them on an EHR system. Google and Facebook have shown that the free, ad-supported model offers a popular, way of delivering services. Now the same model is available for physicians needing an EHR,” said Dr. Vovan.
Andre Vovan, M.D., MBA, FCCM, the director of a critical care department at a large California hospital, founded Mitochon in 2006. Mitochon’s mEMR serves hundres of physicians nationwide and includes unique mConnect (clinical HIE) technology, enabling physicians to share clinical data with their referral network through its Virtual Medical Community (VMC(TM)).
